The Peanut Capital of the World
Growing up in a small town has its ups and downs; everybody knows everybody. When fall hits, the talk of the town is of America’s largest peanut-themed celebration, the National Peanut Festival! Every year, thousands of visitors from near and far flock to Dothan, Alabama, to take part in these festivities, which honors the history of the peanut industry and the contributions of local peanut farmers. The festival covers more than 200 acres and is a 10-day event from November 5th – 14th of this year. We aren’t called the peanut capital of the world for nothing!
Dothan’s National Peanut Festival attractions have come a long way from their origin in 1938 when Dr. George Washington Carver gave a speech that launched the very first celebration. There is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy, and for locals, it’s merely a tradition to attend. For the thrill-seekers like myself, amusement park rides are among my first and favorite thing to do at the festival.
With Halloween echoing in the past and hot chocolate stands, pumpkins, and autumn decor lining the streets, feelings of sweet nostalgia fill your body as you enter the gates of the Peanut Festival and the little kid at heart comes out.
Hearing the squeals and laughter through the crisp air as the smells of mouth-watering fair food hits your nose is an indescribable feeling. From the sweet funnel cakes to the flavorful boiled peanuts, there is no argument that the food is something we look forward to all year.
There is an endless array of food vendors to choose from, and I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t love the giant turkey legs, the piping hot corn on the cob, and the Corndog Man himself who blesses the crowd with his secret recipe of hand-dipped, southern-style corn dogs that are to die for.
The fairground usually brings several renowned musical artists to perform at the amphitheaters each year. This year will be jam-packed (pun intended) of festival-goers eager to dance and sing along. Gabby Barrett, Parmalee, and Blane Rudd are a few of the artists that will be performing. If music is not your thing, no need to worry! There are various smaller-scale performances that are equally entertaining, such as gun shows, chainsaw artists, comedy acts, agricultural shows, demolition derbies, and a petting zoo that many love.
Not only is the National Peanut Festival one of the biggest hits of the year, but Dothan is also known for having nearly 500 restaurants. Our team members boast to customers daily of different eateries, all offering that southern hospitality and charm that Alabama is known for and what we incorporate into our work atmosphere.
Spread the word to your friends, family, and co-workers, and let us show you what Dothan has to offer. Call our team ahead of time and let us organize your entire visit!
